Which Artist Shares Your Birthday?

I recently started the habit of watching out for the birthdays of famous artists. Doing this creates a wonderful opportunity to check out artists that I may not be familiar with and also it is a great thing to share on social media sites like tweeter. For instance, Edward Hopper's birthday was (July 22, 1882). Today I happened upon a wonderful find on my daily birthday search and that is the tool on the Smithsonian American Art Museum's (SAAM) website that allows you to search your birthday and see what artist in their collection birthday matches yours. So stop by to see if there is an artist in the SAAM collection that was born on your birthday. SAAM Birthday Finder

A Thinking Man

'I really wish I was less of a thinking man and more of a fool not afraid of rejection.' "Sleeping With The Television On" -Billy Joel Sometimes you just need to make a decision and not be so afraid of rejection or you'll never do anything.

Camellia 'Winter's Star'

Camellias are an evergreen shrub and small tree that are loved for their flowering. This version is a small tree version and is actually several Camellias planted near each other. Camellia 'Winter's Star' bloom from late winter to early spring so it was one of the few plants I saw blooming. Camellias are named after Georg Joseph Camel (1661-1706) a Jesuit missionary to the Philippines to whom main interest in plants was for the use of medicine. It does not seem however that Camel ever used a Camellia but instead they were named after him purely in his honor. Save

A Room Hung With Pictures

"A room hung with pictures is a room hung with thoughts." Joshua Reynolds One of my favorite quotes. The prolific English painter Joshua Reynolds statement "A room hung with pictures is a room hung with thoughts." frames the way in which I think about art and pictures. They are ideas in visual form. The statement of pictures being ideas does not stop at the original meaning of artwork by the artist but also what the image means to the viewer. Pictures can reinforce or change ideas of perception. It can challenge what you think about the world and force you to think differently.

10 Things I Regret Doing While Learning Photography

I started taking photographs back in 2006 when I was taking photography classes at a junior college. In my first photography class, we shot only film and printed our pictures on B&W enlargement paper. There was a sort of romance to it. You took a photograph and just walked away. No looking at a screen over and over again but instead you just had to have some confidence in what you were doing. Then I started shooting digital and I guess this is where the 10 things I regret list starts. 10. Reading too many books on Photoshop. I have them on my shelf..books about Adobe Photoshop CS2 books about Photoshop artistry and don't get me wrong a lot of the information was useful...but did I really nee

Being an Artist

"Everything is gestation and then birthing. To let each impression and each embryo of a feeling come to completion, entirely in itself, in the dark, in the unsayable, the unconscious, beyond the reach of one's own understanding, and with deep humility and patience to wait for the hour when a new clarity is born: this alone is what it means to live as an artist: in understanding as in creating." Rainer Maria Rilke, poet and novelist
